Malaysian public universities will be referred to as ‘UA’ instead of ‘IPTA’. — Picture courtesy Universiti Malaya Facebook pageJOHOR BARU, March 9 — The term IPTA used to refer to Public Higher Learning Institutions will no longer be used but replaced with ‘Public Universities’ (UA) with immediate effect.
This was decided by the Vice-Chancellors and Rectors Committee (JNCR) in a meeting held today as an effort to uplift the status of public universities in the country.
JNCR Chairman Datuk Prof Dr Kamarudin Hussin said, the committee unanimously decided in the meeting held today that the term ‘IPTA’ be changed to UA to accord a more prestigious status to public universities.
“After getting the consent of the Education Ministry recently, all public universities in the country will be known as UA while the term IPTA will be used to refer to community and polytechnic colleges,” Kamarudin said after chairing the JNCR meeting at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, here today.
The term would involve 20 public universities and more than 60 community and polytechnic colleges.
They include Universiti Malaya, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).
Earlier, the committee also informed the use of the term ‘Malaysia Qualification Statement’ in all 20 UAs.
Kamarudin said the statement would give added value to the students’ scrolls and transcripts, providing detailed information about the student, including the soft skills they possessed.
“The MQS is more about the qualities which are not stated in the scroll or transcript,” Kamarudin, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of UniMAP, said.
It includes the involvement of the graduates in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes that are considered important to provide a balance to the academic achievements, especially when they are applying for jobs or furthering their studies abroad, he said.
The JNCR meeting, held in four series each year, is attended by 16 vice-chancellors and rectors of public universities while the next meeting is expected to be held at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in May. — Bernama
